忘却とは忘れ去ることなりき・・・

久しぶりに、ヘンデルのメサイアでも聴いてみましょうか・・・

この録音は全曲盤ではありませんが、発売当時はほぼ全曲盤みたいな扱いだったそうです。当時これだけの大曲のレコードはそう多くはなかったでしょうから。ステレオ創世記の録音でもあります。

CDには、録音年 1958-1959と記載がありますが、この間の John Hunt のディスコグラフィ（その１、その２） によれば、
recorded on 2-3 November 1958 in Town Hall とあります。
LPは Columbia M2L263（Regular Mono),M2S607(Stereo)、抜粋して1枚に纏めた物が、MS6679 （CDはSME/SC Essential Classics SBK48172 、現在は Sony BMG/Esprit 88697172742 として、 Tower, HMV 等で入手可能）として出ているようです。

この録音はCD時代にも早い時期に再発売されています。CD発売が1982年からですから、それから3年しか経っていません。需要があったんでしょうねえ。

Bookletの裏（CDケースの裏もほぼ同じですが）を見ると、

M2K607 also available on conventional disc & cassette とか、
This historic recording has been digitally transferred onto Compact Disc to obtain the best possible reproduction from newly remixed original session tapes. という記載があります。

conventional disc とは、LP（アナログ・ディスク）のことですな。cassette は勿論、ミュージック・カセット・テープのこと。当時はカセットも結構販売されていたんですなあ・・・

当時、SONY と関係が深いCBS Masterworks はアナログ・マスターのCD化にも積極的 だったようで、ワルター・コロンビア響 の一連のステレオ録音のディジタル・リマスタリング及びCD化を積極的に進めてましたね・・・もう20年以上前の出来事になったしまいました。

当時の original session tape は恐らく3チャネル(Left, Center, Right）でしょうから、センターチャネルを左右のチャネルに振り分け直す ミックスダウンを新たにやり直した（newly remixed）のでしょう。その成果もあり、このCDでは50年前の録音とは思えない程瑞々しい音で彼らの演奏を聴くことが出来ます。ただ、所々テープの経年劣化や損傷によるノイズも聞こえますが、耳障りという程ではありません。

年末に第9やメサイヤを聴くのもまた良いかな。所謂当時のピリオド楽器による演奏は聴いたことがありませんが、こういうモダン・オケでの演奏も悪くないと思いますよ。そういう意味では貴重な録音かもしれませんなあ・・・んでは。
