To apply the term "hit" to the recordings of a classical artist may seem far-fetched, for it is true that very few classical artists reach the mass market. But some do. Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra indubitably do. It is probably safe to say that during their 25 years on Columbia Records, they have been heard on more phonographs in more homes than any other classical artists since Caruso.

The Record Industry Association of America has been confirmed the enormous success of Ormandy recordings in three instances by awarding Gold Records for "Handel's Messiah", "The Glorious Sound of Christmas", and "The Lord's Prayer". The Gold Record award signifies a sale of more than $1,000,000 worth of long playing albums. Since the inception of this award in 1958, only three other classical artists have received it - one Gold Record each.

LPの解説を長々と引用しましたが、要は、オーマンディとフィラデルフィアが当時（1950年代後半～1960年代後半）のColumbia Records の文字通りドル箱黄金コンビであった・・・ということですな。

1950年代後半にステレオLPが出始めたというタイミングも大きいのでしょうが、この当時のオーマンディとフィラデルフィア のレコードは本当に良く売れていた・・・ということを複数の記述に見ることが出来ます。

ということで作られたこのアルバム、管弦楽の聴き所を集めたサンプラーという趣向。

この当時のLPはステレオ録音のモノラル盤も併売していた・・・というより、レギュラー盤はモノラルでステレオ盤はそれよりも高値で販売されていた・・・という感じがします。

当時のモノラル用ピックアップ（カートリッジ）はステレオ・レコードに含まれる縦方向の動きを考慮していないので、これでステレオ・レコードを再生すると溝を傷めてしまう・・・ということで、ステレオ録音にもかかわらずかなり長い間、ステレオ録音のモノラル盤を出していた時期があったようです。

その後、レコードプレーヤーも安価になったりとか、モノラル用ピックアップでもステレオ盤再生に問題のない製品が普及するに至り、このようなステレオ録音のモノラル盤は姿を消していきますが・・・
